Kali Uchis Bids a Fond Farewell in Colorful New Single and Video for “I Wish you Roses”

Kali Uchis by Cho Gi-Seok

Ahead of multiple high-profile festival appearances at Coachella and Lollapalooza, R&B singer Kali Uchis has dropped a new single and music video for “I Wish you Roses.” This latest track is the first purely English language single, coming as somewhat of a surprise considering the success of her Spanish language album Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞ spawned her first top 10 hit with “telepatía.” But “I Wish you Roses” has all the ingredients that make Uchis stand out from any other R&B and soul artist, including a unique artistic vision that comes through the union of music and visuals.

Similar to the colorful video of Uchis in bright makeup and rose-inspired outfits (eagle-eyed viewers are sure to spot the American Beauty reference), the track is a lush and lovely goodbye free of any gloom or bad blood. If anything, it’s a seductive fond farewell that works for “a friend, a lover, or someone else, but the point is to celebrate releasing people,” according to Uchis herself. That sense of independence certainly comes through in the lyrics, feeling empowered through the constant illusions of roses. Flower imagery isn’t exactly a new concept for her, but this time it takes on an explicit meaning for a song all about evolution.

And in the context of Uchis and her evolution as an artist, her rapid growth in the past three years is nothing to overlook. The production for the song and the video are on a whole other level, both of which paint a vivid and versatile romanticization fit for Uchis and her velveteen voice. In her world, it doesn’t matter whether she’s singing in English or Spanish. The ever-expanding quality in her art is always a sure bet.
